Devour is a visual investigation into the connection between visual aesthetics in journalistic narratives and their sensational and emotional impact on the receivers.
Devour is a looping six minute video work that examines the relativity of perception and understanding, pushing an audience's expectations of acceptable limits of role and representation in news images. The video brings to our attention the current capitalization of our emotions through a medium that once was believed to be objective and distant, proposing an accelerated aesthetics of journalism that is all but neutral. A juxtaposition of moments we expect to see in news visuals is documenting as much as faking a situation of war, natural disaster, and so on. The work merges simulated immersive environments, first person narratives, found footage and accelerated contemporary graphics into one emotionally loaded twining stream―a field of images that prevent us from seeing the reality of the world we've constructed are placed in a cannibalistic confrontation, “devouring each other”.
The work was part of the exhibition The New Newsroom at MU, which ran from 12 October - 11 November 2018.
